The end of the dot-com era does not signal the end of interest in Web Services, online communities are growing faster then ever as more people are being connected to the internet. Software professionals all over the world risk reinventing the wheel when they attempt to "roll their own" web software. The OpenACS, an open sourced web platform based upon AOLserver (the web server used by AOL) and PostgreSQL (the most full featured open source database), is one of the most common tools used to rapidly deploy complex web services. Come hear a veteran of the dot-com era talk about the architecture, services, and problems with OpenACS. Included will be a discussion on serious vulnerabilities found on most web sites. Tristan Cohen is a GeekCorps volunteer working with the UITE to promote Open Source Software development in Armenia (check out www.opensourcearmenia.com soon to find out more). He used to work for arsDigita and helped to develop Site59.com, an online travel site recently acquired by travelocity.com, and on the knowledge management system used by Siemens corporation.
