OSA History

Open Source Armenia was initiated by an international group of enthusiasts intended to help develop Armenian IT industry.

  • In the Fall 2002, Hovhannes Avoyan, President of UITE, Armen Shahverdyan, Dork Alahydoian (USA), representative of the Armenian High-Tech Council of America and Tomas Krag (Denmark) of the International Executives Service Corps got together to discuss ideas on promoting and developing Armenian software industry and eventually decided that open source projects would be a great way to achieve that challenging goal.
  • January 31, 2003, The domain name www.opensourcearmenia.com was registered and start operating.
  • February 25, 2003 - First open source project started by the CIS students of the American University of Armenia. Details can be found at http://www.opensourcearmenia.com/Projects/vcb
  • March 10, 2003 - The Eurasia Foundation decides to sponsor further development of OpenSourceArmenia.com. Read more at http://www.eurasia.org/news/armenia_grants_03.10.03.htm
  • End of March, 2003 - The IESC/Geekcorps executive, Tristan Cohen joins the OSA team by helping maintain OSA web site and its content, as well as providing valuable consultancy on Open Source project management.
  • On May 14, 2003 an official web site Launch Event took place.
